What is Lupus Nephritis?

Lupus Nephritis is kidney inflammation caused by systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). It is an autoimmune disease. The problem happens when lupus includes kidneys. Around 60 percent of the patients with lupus develop lupus nephritis.

Symptoms of Lupus Nephritis

Due to the seriousness of the problem, its symptoms are not dramatic. Firstly, the patients will notice swelling in the ankles, legs, and feet. In some cases, there can be swelling in the hands and face. Other symptoms can vary from person to person or from day to day. This can include:

  • High Blood pressure
  • Weight gain
  • Foamy & Frothy urine
  • Need to urinate during the night
  • Dark urine

People with lupus can also face issues of urinary tract infection. When a person pee, it can result in a burning sensation, and a requirement is needed with antibiotics. There can be swelling and other symptoms that are similar to lupus nephritis.

Lupus Nephritis Diagnosis and Treatment

  • Diagnosis: Lupus nephritis diagnosis starts with the medical history, physical examination, and evaluating the symptoms. The doctor will order tests to make or confirm a diagnosis. Tests are used to diagnose kidney issues which are done through urine tests, blood tests, kidney biopsy, and imaging tests like ultrasound.

Treatment

Treatment for lupus nephritis is based on the types of problems you have and it is determined by biopsy. The symptoms and severity will vary from person to person. This is the reason, treatment is given individually to the patients to deal with their particular circumstances. Some of the medications included in treatment include:

  • Corticosteroids: The drug is used for decreasing inflammation. The drug can result in different side effects and this is why it is important to monitor the patient’s condition.
  • Immunosuppressive drugs: The drugs are used to treat cancer or prevent the rejection of undergoing transplanted organs. They work by pressing the immune system which damages the kidneys.
  • Some patients need to take medications to prevent blood clots or lower the blood pressure level.
