Pyeloplasty surgery used to correct the condition named UPJ (ureteropelvic junction). This condition can obstruct the urine flow to come out from the kidneys through the ureter.

What is UPJ obstruction?

The main issue of OPJ is that it blocks the urine flow which comes out from the kidney into the ureter. The ureter is a tube that attaches the kidney to the bladder. The obstruction occurs where the kidney is attached to the ureter i.e. ureteropelvic junction.

What are the reasons behind UPJ obstruction?

Mostly, UPJ obstruction occurs in children. In some cases, the condition is present from birth and this is known as a congenital condition. Mostly, this is the reason conditions are formed. The blockage occurs when the area between the ureter and kidney part gets narrow. When the kidney is forming, this problem can happen. Due to urine buildup and increased pressure in the kidney, there can be issues of kidney damage. Usually, this issue affects only one kidney. Some of the additional causes of blockage of adults and children:

  • Abnormal blood vessel over the ureter
  • Earlier treatments for a blockage
  • Scar tissue
  • Infection
  • Kidney stones

What is the method of treating UPJ obstruction?

UPJ obstruction is treated with surgery. If the problem is severe, then it is best to get it done in early life. However, not in all cases, there is a need for surgery. Following the surgery, the urine flow will get normal.
For children, open surgery is needed. If you are an adult, then a less invasive method can be done which is called pyeloplasty. This entire process will take a few hours.
During the surgery, a 2 to 3-inch cut is made below the ribs and this helps in removing the obstructed part of the ureter. To the renal pelvis, the normal caliber ureter is attached again. To drain urine from the kidney the stent is placed. Once the patient heals from the surgery, the stent will be removed.

What are the options to diagnose UPJ obstruction?

Typically, the UPJ obstruction is found through an ultrasound. In some cases, the obstruction might not be seen until the time of birth. In some cases, different family members can suffer from the condition. Following birth, different tests can be performed which includes:

  • CT scan
  • CT urogram (scan of both kidneys with contrast)
  • Electrolytes
  • Ultrasound
  • Blood test
  • Urine and blood test
  • Nuclear scan of kidneys
  • X-ray of kidneys, ureters, and bladder.
  • Voiding cystourethrogram (X-ray of the bladder while it is emptying)
