Types of Dialysis
Dialysis is of two types: Peritoneal and Hemodialysis
Peritoneal Dialysis
- To perform peritoneal dialysis, a soft hollow tube is placed near the navel through the lower abdomen.
- Following that, a special solution is inserted known as dialysate. It is inserted into the peritoneal cavity which is a space in the abdomen, and 2 membrane layers are lined by it
- The solution is left there for some time that will be determined according to the individual.
- The fluid is drained from the abdomen, measured it, and discarded.
Types of Peritoneal Dialysis
- Continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis (CAPD)
- Continuous cyclic peritoneal dialysis (CCPD)
- Intermittent peritoneal dialysis (IPD)
Hemodialysis
Hemodialysis is performed at home, in hospital, or a dialysis centre by the medical health expert. During the procedure, the doctor will:
- Place a special type of access surgically that is called AV fistula in the arm. The vein and artery need to be joined together.
- After that, you are connected to a large hemodialysis centre.
- The machine drains the blood, bathes it in a special dialysate solution that helps to remove waste substances, and then get it back to the bloodstream.
What to keep in mind when you undergo hemodialysis?
- Mostly hemodialysis is performed several times a week and it can last for 4 to 5 hours. The process is quite lengthy so you must bring reading material along with you to pass your time.
- During the treatment, you can read, watch TV, or listen to music.
- If you get it done at home, you need help from your partner or any family member. The doctor will give you special training and instructions to do it correctly at home.
Diet Plan
Your doctor will work with you to give the diet plan that helps you have a smooth recovery:
- The patient needs to avoid salt.
- The patient needs to limit the amount they drink.
- There is a restriction on the potassium diet.
- You need to eat food high in protein like chicken and meat.
